Every so often , you get to meet someone who is truly exceptional.
I had the privilege to meet Shay in flight school in 1991. I noticed shay on the first day of our tironut. I saw a skinny guy with a big smile competing with a bunch of bigger guys to be the" magist" of our class. The competition consisted of who would do the most push ups and I think even our instructor, Roy O, was surprised by the winner. .. Slowly but surely, we became good friends and shared the same tent and room for a year.
Dadon (as we all called him) had a sense of calm and harmony that always inspired confidence in all of us. He excelled in every part of military training and did so while always staying humble, down to earth and at peace with himself. When I look at Roy, his oldest son, I see this same character trait – a desire to win, to be the best , but without ever doing so on account of others.
When we started our infantry navigation training, I knew I wanted him as my partner. Apart from being a friend, I admired Dadon and wanted to learn from him as much as possible. When the bus would drive off and the our eyes adjust to the night, Dadon would take a few seconds to smell the desert, orient himself, and start running in the right direction. Amazingly, Dadon chose not to use his compass and completed the entire two week training just by using the stars to orient himself!
Shay is one of the people whom I most admire. He is smart, ambitious, brave, loving and someone you can always count on. He loves a challenge and unlike most of us, never chooses the easy route. In the 17 years i’ve known him, he never once complained or bitched about anything – its simply is not in his DNA!
While being very analytical, Shay has this rare ability not to overcomplicate problems and find the correct path intuitively. When he first started dating Lihi, he announced to me that he will marry her! I found this a little premature but, as always, Shay knew what he wanted, knew what was right, and made it a reality.
When it comes to family, I know very few men who measure up to him. Always smiling, always available and always loving. When his lovely wife, Lihi, gave birth to twins (bringing the kid headcount to 5), he joked, with his charming smile, that he and Lihi are on auto pilot anyway and there is no difference between three and five. The Danor house is always filled with happiness, friends, and laughter.
I will always remember his laughter, his smiling green eyes, and his positive attitude to life. For Shay, it was always about being the best, staying modest and humble, and proving, again and again, that, if you set goals and work hard, anything can be achieved. For me, that is the legacy he leaves behind.
